Weekend in a list

In vaguely chronological order:
  • Finished the chili, tasted it in the afternoon, liked it.
  • Shared the chili with Donald and Robyn and Mike.
  • Went to opening night of Rabbit Hole with aforementioned folks
  • Chatted after the show with various people
  • Donald got sick
  • Got Japanese food with Robyn and Mike, Donald stayed at home in bed
  • Played Settlers, lost to Robyn
  • Played around in the show, swept off cars
  • Got food from Kin Lin
  • Played Settlers, lost to Robyn again
  • Swept off cars again
  • Hung lights at Union Station (UMKC)
  • Neglected sick husband by working. :(
  • Hung lights downtown at Copaken (Love, Janis)
  • Watched TV with Donald and ate leftovers
The light hang at Copaken went surprisingly well yesterday, and I discovered a good thing. The H&R Block people have an awesome cafeteria. For a reasonable price, you have at least 5 different stations and a nice salad bar to choose from. I had a nice sandwich, chips and a drink for $7.50. Sure, that's 2 bucks more than fast food, but I had a very good hot toasty sandwich including premium ingredients like portabella mushrooms. And I didn't have to leave the building. And there were at least 4 other things that I would have eaten just as happily. So that's good news, since I'm going to be spending a lot of time at that theater for the next several months at least.

The furnace died this morning. It made a quiet high pitched whine, that quickly became a loud high pitched whine, so I shut it off and called the landlord. The handymen came and looked at it, and decreed that the motor was going out. So they took the motor away, and are getting another one. I wonder what would have happened if I hadn't been home.

I'm also making chili in my crockpot today. It has many bell peppers in it, and should be tasty goodness.

Edit: It's fixed! The handyman just put a new motor in. Maybe it will work better than the last one and it will actually get warm in here.

Mmmm scones

I'm the star of the tech rehearsal today. I brought treats. Last night at Muddy's, they were liquidating their excess pastries. I helpfully took 6 scones and 2 croissants off their hands. I brought them to tech today to share with the hungry theatre types. I''m enjoying my 15 minutes of adoration. :P

yummy

I just had a new cookie. Snackwell's chocolate mint cookie cakes. This isn't a deep post full of insight, just a reminder to myself that I should buy me some of these tasty cookie treats.

Clearly, I'm in tech. I have a bit of sitting around thinking about cookies time.

Rabbit Hole at the Unicorn

Come see Rabbit Hole at the Unicorn. I'm designing the lights. It'll b neat.

Satisfied

I'm feeling content at the moment. This week I worked a bunch at the Rep, then switched over to the Unicorn for Rabbit Hole. Thursday I went in to install my groundrow and do a couple of other notes. Then we had a paper tech. For the non-theatre folks, a paper tech is when designers and the Stage Manager sit down together and the Stage Manager writes all the cues into her prompt book. Of course, you change them all when you get into tech, but it's nice to have something to start from. Then after a dinner break, I did a lightover. Light over is when the Lighting Designer fiddles with lights or writes cues during a regular rehearsal. Again, saves a lot of time in tech, because then I don't have to start from scratch. That way, everyone doesn't have to wait on me to build a cue, since I already had one to go from. It went well, I wrote a bunch of cues and took a bunch of notes on things that needed to be fixed.

Today I started the day by not hitting or getting hit by any other cars. I consider that to be a nice success, since it was already quite slippery at 9:45 am. I slid a few times, and the windshield kept icing up, but I made it and parked safely. At 10 am we started a dry tech. Dry tech is when the director and designers and crew go through the whole show without actors. The purpose is to look at light cues and listen to sound cues and make adjustments before adding acting into the equation. A big element of today's dry tech was setting turntable speeds and marks, since the majority of the set is on a turntable. We made it through by about 4, then I discovered (glee!) that I didn't have to be at the evening rehearsal. I worked on some of my notes, and headed out. Clearing the car was easier than expected, all the icy crap brushed right off. Then I just had to drive slowly home. Again, I avoided getting creamed by fast driving idiots. Once home, I made food for dinner and to take with me for tomorrow's dinner. Then I updated some paperwork for the show. To finish the day, Donald and I got delicious coffee. I can't believe we left the warm house to do it, but it was worth it.

Tomorrow and Sunday: more tech. With actors. I anticipate bursts of working on cues mixed with chunks of waiting. At least I will have The Internet.

random

In my neighborhood I have recently noticed an odd couple. They walk their dog, and they wear the same clothes. Not just similar, but actually same. Same hat, shirt, jacket, pants and shoes. I know it isn't a fluke because I've seen them twice. Robyn asked if it was the same outfit both times. After thinking a bit, I think it was. Why do this guy and this gal put on the exact same outfit to walk their dog? It is clearly not accidental.

busy busy

The lull is over, and I'm busy again. Last week I hung lights for my show at the Unicorn and worked part of 3 days at the Rep for King Lear. I also visited my great aunt in a nursing home, which was depressing. I also had a production meeting and watched a rehearsal. It wasn't a really busy week, but things are starting to pick up. Today I will watch a full run through of Rabbit Hole at the Unicorn, then focus lights. Next week is going to be very busy. I'm sure to be working on Rabbit Hole or King Lear every day. I'll have to get up and get to work at a decent time, dammit! Then next weekend we go into tech for Rabbit Hole.

Another new year

Welp, it's 2007.

I have a mild headache, and I don't feel like working later.

Therefore, life is officially the same as 2006.
