Trapped

I almost couldn't go to work today. When Donald left after lunch, the doorknob fell off. Usually the hall side knob falls off. (How sad is it to have ANY doorknob that "usually" falls off?) This time it was the inside doorknob. He went on to work and I figured I'd fix it later.

Later, when I was leaving for work, I realized that it's fairly difficult to exit an apartment without a doorknob. I tried to use pliers to grab the post and twist, but had no luck. I tried to call my folks, so someone could come let me out, but nobody answered. I was beginning to wonder if I was stuck, when I remembered that I could go out the side door. And that's what I did, although it left our apartment unlocked, since there's no way to lock the door to the stairs. Yes, I could have then gone in the front door and fixed the knob, but by that point I was late. Frickin' doorknob.

Oscars- in one post

I caught about 5 minutes of the end of the Oscars last night. All I know is that Jack Nicholson looked like a slimy gray slug that has been under a rock for a long time, and Diane Keaton looked great.

That's it!

Number one!

Yesterday we had a 2 show day, so we decided to stay in and have a crock pot cookoff. We have a 2 show day today as well, so the plan was to eat the leftovers today. That's not going to work so well, since there aren't that many leftovers. Freeloaders ate our stuff but didn't contribute.

Anyhoo, we had a nice smell backstage as our crockpots burbled through the show, then after the show we all dashed backstage and chowed down. There was potato soup, broccoli noodle stuff, Normandy chicken, my chili, salad in a crockpot, and a brownie dish. After all was consumed, they decided the chili was the winner, and I even got a ribbon. :) Sadly, there's no chili left.

Today I love: Lily Allen

Check out this British chick. The songs are really catchy, and the videos are both twisted and hilarious! I challenge you to not get these tunes stuck in your head.

More flowers

The sun was shining, so here are some pictures of my african violets that I took a few minutes ago: (click for big) The purple ones are less blue in real life.

Puzzles

Reasons why sudoku puzzles are good to do during a show:
  • concentrating on the puzzle keeps me from zoning out
  • the puzzle is all numbers, so they're no conflict with the words I hear through my headset
  • the pocket size book is small and doesn't get in the way
  • it makes me feel smart when I finish a Hard one

That was way too exciting

Yesterday was a 2 -show day. Show #1 at 3:00 went fine. Before show #2 at 7:00 could get started, the projectors decided to stop working. The many thousand dollars- very important to the show projectors. Instead of projecting images the way they should, the images were happily spinning in place. Long story short, we started Act 1 fifteen minutes late with no projections. At intermission they got restarted and Act 2 went as normal. That was definitely not something we want to happen again.

Donald and I got up at a decent time this morning intending to go get some breakfast. We were thwarted by the hordes of people who got there before us. We had to go back home, visions of scrambled eggs, breakfast potatoes and toast dancing in our heads- and eat cereal. What a disappointment. Cheerios are no substitute for nice hot breakfast food. :(

Snowing again!

Dammit! It's supposed to get up to 50 degrees next week, but right now it's snowing again. At least it's pretty. :(

In pleasant news- I just added up how many hours I'll have worked by the end of this week, and it's 45. That means 5 hours of time-and-a-half overtime. Hell yeah.

New specs

I got my eyes checked today, and ordered a new pair of glasses. I went a bit out on a limb and got something pretty different than what I have already, but I think they're going to look cool. I'll post a picture when I get them in a week or so. They kindly replaced the nose pads on my current pair of glasses for me. It's great to have new nose pads, but now they're sticking to my skin and it will feel weird for probably a week. And then I'll have new ones on the new glasses again. :P

Sewing

Today I'm making my 2 new pairs of pants shorter, to match my midgety little legs. To make them fit me, and to avoid (for once) the rolling up of cuffs, I must shorten them 4 inches. Yes, my inseam is 28". Yes, this is annoying, but they do not make pants for short people.

Next week I'm getting an eye exam. I know I need a stronger prescription. I'm very ready for new glasses too. I've had these frames for several years now. The new frames must have the magnetic sunglasses. I'm so hooked on those.

I'm on a really odd eating schedule right now. If the show is at 7, I have to be at the theater at 5:30, so I'm eating my dinner at 4:30. But I'm hungry now, at 1:30, so I need to have a snack. I also need to cook somethin' because I just looked at my calendar, and I need to take a meal with me for the next 3 days.

surprisingly painless

I looked at my bank account info this morning and found a $15 late fee on my credit card. It said it was due 2/5, and I paid 2/6. I think I paid 2/5, but didn't get in under their cutoff time of 6pm. I don't get why online transfers don't happen faster, but that's not the point. So I called the customer service, waited on hold for just a few minutes, then the nice lady refunded my $15. She said it was no problem becuase I was a good customer. Which made me feel happy, which is silly because the lady on the phone doesn't care about me, but my account info shows that I pay on time and all. Easiest customer service I've had in a while. (Screw you, cingular)

Day OFF

I'm so glad to have a day off. Last week was looong. And cooold.

Lemme sum up. Thursday the 25th I left for a week long ALD job in Kentucky for an opera. Despite having internet access all over, I didn't post for some reason. The job was fine, Louisville was okay, and I had more free time than I expected. One night I saw a play at Actor's Theatre of Louisville. Too much free time, and by that I mean that the time I spent sleeping some mornings would have been better spent working on the damn show. They had a stupid schedule that put the lighting designer way behind, and he never did get to a bunch of stuff that he wanted to. Also, the hotel was gigantic, but not especially nice; and the food it sold was both overpriced and crappy. And no free breakfast! Stupid hotel.

I got back last Thursday, landed and got picked up about 4pm. I had dinner with my folks, then went head fist into Love, Janis tech at 6:30. As the light board operator, my job is much more than normal. Normally, the stage manager says go, I push the button, and go back to my book. This show, I often have to keep time with the music while making lights flash in time with my left hand, and listen to the SM and push go with my left hand. It's a lot more work and responsibility. But now that I'm getting better at it, it's starting to be fun too. I also will be basically in charge of making sure all the lights work every day, and please join me in hoping that they do work. I say this because it will be a lot of work to change some of the lamps. A lot of work that involves me and probably 3 other people wrestling a several hundred pound genie lift into a place to get to the lights. Not fun.

So today on my fabulous day off, I plan to purchase food, and maybe some clothes. I've nearly worn out all my sox. I need to watch the tape for last week's Studio 60 before watching this week's episode. I need to make some food to eat. And I plan to spend some time with Donald, who I've barely seen at all since I got home.

back home, for a minute

I'm back from Kentucky, and I've gone straight into 14 hour days at tech for Love, Janis.
Yesterday I landed around 4, went to rehearsal at 6:30, and got home at 11. Today I was there 14 hours, and tomorrow's lookin' about the same.
So I'll see you guys later.
(Think of the paycheck!)
