I almost couldn't go to work today. When Donald left after lunch, the doorknob fell off. Usually the hall side knob falls off. (How sad is it to have ANY doorknob that "usually" falls off?) This time it was the inside doorknob. He went on to work and I figured I'd fix it later.
Later, when I was leaving for work, I realized that it's fairly difficult to exit an apartment without a doorknob. I tried to use pliers to grab the post and twist, but had no luck. I tried to call my folks, so someone could come let me out, but nobody answered. I was beginning to wonder if I was stuck, when I remembered that I could go out the side door. And that's what I did, although it left our apartment unlocked, since there's no way to lock the door to the stairs. Yes, I could have then gone in the front door and fixed the knob, but by that point I was late. Frickin' doorknob.

That's too funny! Did you tell Donald you didn't lock the door? Cause I bet he didn't like that...
You should get the doors like on Star Trek. Get the Holodeck doors, though, so you get that little almost musical thing and not just the standard "swish."
Well, then you have to worry about the Holodeck characters coming to life and trying to kill you.
That would be so awesome to live on a holodeck! You could live in a closet, but it would still be like a mansion!
But then you would never want to leave the holodeck- so having doors that made a cool noise would be moot- you would never use them to leave. Unless your doors INSIDE your holodeck world made a cool noise....
and you would still have to worry about the holodeck trying to kill you- it's happened more than once. Or twice.
You could set it up to mimic the real world, similar to what they did with Moriarty, and then you would never know if you were in the real world or on the holodeck. (Well, I guess unless you said, "Arch.")
I love how we have hi-jacked Margaret's comments to discuss Star Trek holodecks.
Sometimes the Arch doesn't show up- and then the characters try to kill you.
You're really hooked on this "the characters try to kill you" thing. Let's focus on the positive.
1)Your apartment could be the size of a planet. The entire universe.
2)You could create whatever you need. Transportation, furnishings, material possessions.
3)You would never have to leave. 99% of the people you meet throughout the day are fake anyway. And you could still go out in the real world if you wanted to.
4)If you could rig it with a replicator ... You could eat whatever you want.
5)Free healthcare.
I'm so excited about this. I'm going to tell Amy that I want to move into a Holodeck.
I want to move to a holodeck too! I kind of feel if it were anything like anyone of the elaborate flights of fancy in my brain already, it would be awesome! Plus, if you didn't like it, you could change it.
yeah, but what would rent be for an apartment with a holodeck? even a studio would be really freakin' pricey.
not to mention the electric bill.
(sorry i ended up being 'that guy' and ruining the thread.)
(also, please ignore my complete and total disregard for capitalization, especially if you read my blog and see my posts about kids not knowing how to use the english language. i know. that's the difference.)
Holy crap, look what happened while I was at work. Don't you nerds have something better to do? :)
al- What would happen, I imagine it would be like those courtroom scenes where the city guy gets arrested in the little backwater. Or where some guy is screwed in the middle of nowhere, his car is broken down, and the only mechanic around knows it.
The landlord takes you to the holopartment, shows it to you, and then when he knows you have more money ... he makes it classier behind your back.
"What do you mean 600? It was 450 a minute ago! And where did that wet bar come from?"
That's a good point about the electric bill. Although ... how would the power company figure the cost on Dilithium?

I still love imagining this. Right now I'm thinking a two story in a cozy little neighborhood. No, three-story. The first floor is divided in two: One side is my comic shop, the other is whatever the wife wants. And then the top two floors are for us to live in.
The second floor is our "living area". It's got the kitchen and tv room, etc. The top floor would be our bedrooms and a study and an office. And then on the roof is the garage for our hovercars. Because it's my holodeck, baby.
