I’m filling in on a show where an artist works on a watercolor painting on an easel. What they have is a big watercolor pad, and she’s “painting” on the top page. This really bothers me, because nobody would watercolor like that. If you tried to paint like that, the paper would curl and get wrinkled. A watercolor artist would have a single sheet of watercolor paper taped out on a drawing board. They vetoed that because later on the painting gets picked up and waved about. Another option would be a watercolor block, where instead of glue on one edge, the glue is on all four edges so the sheet of paper stays put. Another option would be a “canvas” where you have a stretched piece of paper instead of fabric. It just looks wrong up there.
